New Zealand Rata Bowl

Carved from northern New Zealand Rata. This tree starts it's life as a vine, eventually growing into a forest giant. This particular bowl was carved from a piece of Rata vine which came down in a storm with the tree that it was growing around. Hence the timber has a lighter colour than that of the mature rata tree timber. It is an extremely hard timber used by Maori to make weapons, however the bowl is more suitable for holding edibles and/or impressing people than as a weapon!
