We live with our four children in a remote and beautiful corner of Golden Bay, New Zealand. We are lucky to own 130 acres of mostly native forest. We have chosen to tread as lightly as possible on the surrounding environment and have built our house out of mostly local materials including onsite clay for the earth walls. All the electrical power for our home and workshop/studio is generated by our small hydro system and solar panels.
Our love of carving wood can be attributed to the process and the material involved. As a material, wood is unique - no piece is ever the same. Each piece has a story to tell. Sometimes harsh, sometime prolific, but always beautiful.
All of the timber we use we source from our surrounding forest using only trees felled by storms or old age. It is an honour to create objects which will allow the elegance of these trees to live on.
The carving process involves the removal of unwanted material to reveal the form within. It’s a process that can be likened to life itself, a slow whittling away of the parts of ones personality that are not required, to eventually reveal ones true self. Each piece of wood, just like each one of us, has that beautiful object within - it just needs to be found! It is our hope that our craft will not only promote New Zealands stunning natural environment, but also allow people to cherish a piece of it within their own home.
